Is this a allergy or infection?

My husband has irritation in his armpits. I noticed there is not any sign of drainage or pus but it has a awful sour smell. I asked him to stop using deodarant as I thought it was a allergic reaction to his skin. I advised him to wash underneath his arms with anti-bacterial soap and put anti-fungal/hydrocortisone cream to the area. I will be calling the doc on Tues to get it checked out..I'm uming he has a fungus but I'm not sure.
