Is Trainspotting an accurate portrayal of Scotland or certain areas of it?

I’ve just finished reading Trainspotting, and I curious about Scotland; although the setting takes place in the 1980s, is the rampant drug (heroin)/ AIDs epidemic an accurate representation of present day Scottish society? Is the content of the book more reflective of 1980s Scottish society?
